Some young students in Cape Breton got a hands-on lesson in Mi'kmaw culture recently.

The Grade 5 students at Bras d'Or Elementary learned how to play the traditional game of waltes.

The Nova Scotia Department of Education is making money available throughReconcili-ACTION grantsfor projects to teach students about Mi'kmaw culture and traditions.

Barrie Bernard is the co-ordinator of Mi'kmaw education for the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education.

One of the grants was used to make waltes games, and the various pieces were made by students at several schools. Bernard is now taking the games to schools to teach kids how to play.
