WestJet baggage charge spurs travelling tips from expert

WestJet has announced it will start charging most customers for checked baggage. The fee will be $25 for the first piece of baggage. Air Canada has not followed suit, but analysts think it's only a matter of time.

What's a cash-strapped traveller to do?

Keep calm and carry on.

When flying in economy class, the airlines will let you carry two pieces of hand luggage on board. One is a personal article a small purse or laptop bag, for example. The other is a small piece of luggage.

That small piece of luggage can't be larger than 23 cm by 40 cm by 55 cm and can't weigh more than 10 kg.

Most standard roller-bags advertised as "carry on" bags come in, at, or under these limits, but you should always measure to be sure. The dimensions include wheels and handles.

Monique DuPuy, of Bedford, is a frequent flyer who said she never checks her luggage. Among her tips:

• Don't pack anything that can't be worn at least two or three different ways.
• Use compression sacks or Ziploc bags to consolidate space. Fill the bags and squeeze out the air. You'll be amazed how much space you save.
• Wear your bulkiest outfit on the plane.
• Be brutal about how many pairs of footwear you really need. Shoes take up a lot of room.
• Pack clothing that's easily hand washed at your destination and clothes that dry quickly.
• Carry solid laundry soap, which won't run afoul of the liquid and gel ban at security.
