High winds lead to power outages, ferry cancellations across Maritimes

Environment Canada issued warnings for parts of Nova Scotia and special weather statements for P.E.I. and parts of New Brunswick Saturday.

More than 10,000 customers were without power as of Saturday evening

Strong winds and heavy rain will affect parts of the Maritimes until late Saturday evening, according to Environment Canada.

In Nova Scotia, Antigonish County, GuysboroughCounty,Inverness County-Mabou and north,Inverness County south of Mabouand Richmond County have wind warnings. Those areas will experiencewind gusts of 90 km/h.

Many areas in the province are still recovering from damage caused by post-tropical storm Fiona in September.

In addition, Antigonish County will experience high storm surge levels and high waves during high tide from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Victoria County is under a rainfall warning. Parts of the Cabot Trail were closed due to flooding Saturday evening.

There are special weather statements for P.E.I and New Brunswick.

There will be higher than normal water levels in P.E.I. and northern parts of New Brunswick fromKent County to Campbellton and Restigouche County.

Ferry cancellations

Some ferry sailings have been disrupted.

Marine Atlantic cancelled Saturday's crossings between North Sydney, N.S., and Port aux Basques, N.L.

Northumberland Ferries cancelled its Saturday sailings between Wood Island, P.E.I., and Caribou, N.S.

Power has been disrupted in the region.

There were 9,400 outages in Nova Scotia at 7 p.m.There wereanother 600 in New Brunswick, mainly in the southwest, and 2,200in P.E.I.
