The miserable winter weather has been a good one for the windshield repair business.

Ron Richard has been repairing glass since 1977 and says its been a bad year for drivers.

"Its probably the worst since Hurricane Juan," said the employee at the Apple Auto Glass in Burnside.

If a windshield gets a chip that is ignored, this can become problematic for two reasons.

Glass repair shops are busy replacing broken windshields, with one saying this is the worst he's seen since hurricane Juan. (CBC)

"If you let your vehicle warm up and then turn your defrosters on, obviously you have a lot of heat hitting a cold substance and first thing youre going to end up, more than likely, with a crack," said Gary Davis, the owner of Apple Auto Glass.

In some cases, people are even throwing hot water on their windshields.

The second big issue is that people are scraping and chipping with too much vigour with some even using tools like shovels and rubber hammers and essentially are breaking their own windshields in the process.
