3 Ottawa men charged in teen's shooting death

Dozens mourned at the family home of 16-year-old Yazdan Ghiasi, who was shot dead in Ottawa Monday, a killing that led to three men being charged.

Azadeh Tabesh sat on Ghiasi's bed, with a blanket over her shoulders and surrounded by his taekwondo medals, and said she can't believe one of her closest friends is gone.

Tabesh, 29, was one ofdozens of peoplemourning at Ghiasi's Ottawa home Wednesday.

"I've never seen this much love and support around us," she said. "It's not only this family's loss, it's the whole community's loss."

Earlier in the day, three Ottawa men were charged in connection with Ghiasi's shooting death near Chinatown on Monday morning.

Abdulhamid Wehbe, 20, was charged with second-degree murder. Khaled Wehbe, 19, and Zakaria Dourhnou, 18, were each charged with being an accessory after the fact.

All three men made brief court appearances before being remanded into custody. Abdulhamid Wehbe, the man facing the second-degree murder charge, is set to appear in court again by video link on Dec. 17.

The lawyers representing Khaled Wehbe and Dourhnou said they will apply for bail as soon as possible. Both suspects are scheduled to appear in court, also by video, on Dec. 14.

An autopsy conducted Tuesday revealed Ghiasi died from a gunshot wound. His death, the city's 10th homicide this year, is not believed to be gang-related, Ottawa police said.

Ghiasi is scheduled to be buried Thursday morning.

Ghiasi was supportive, encouraging: friend

In Ghiasi's room, Tabesh pointed to a brand-new motorcycle helmet.

"His dad just bought him that motorcycle, and he was supposed to go to learn classes, but he didn't have the time," she said, her voice breaking up.

Ghiasi was always supportive and encouraging to friends and family especially to his younger sister Tabesh said. She said she had once come to him during a difficult time, and received his kindness firsthand.

"I was crying and talking to his mom," Tabesh said.

"He just came over and was like, 'I don't want to see you cry, you've got to be happy. If something bad happens to you, there is a reason.'"

Still, Tabesh said, she can't find a reason for Ghiasi's death.
