Bike lane on Laurier opens

The city of Ottawa's bike lane project on Laurier Avenue officially opens Sunday.

There were last-minute alterations to some of the concrete barriers that separate the bike lanes from other traffic on Saturday to make them more accessible to people with disabilities.

That was just one of the complaints about the project, which createdeastbound and westbound bike lanes separated from traffic by using curbs or other barrierson 1.3 kilometres of Laurier from Bronson Avenue to Elgin Street.

Businesspeople and the firefighters union were also concerned.

Butcyclists said it has made the street safer.

The trial project came about because of concern about bicycle safety.

While the idea is not bad, Mark Garciasaid the lanes they could be changed to make life a little easier for everyone.

"The concept was really good the execution is kind of lacking," he said.

This is a pilot project, sothe city said it's prepared to make changes.
