Bixi's lack of bike helmets deters riders

Ottawa's new Bixi bike-renting program may be a quick and convenient means of getting from one point to another, but the lack of helmets is putting some residents off the idea.

Some Ottawa tourists say Ottawa's new bike sharing program should also rent helmets

Ottawa's new Bixi bike-renting program may be a convenientway of getting from one point to another, but the lack of helmets is putting some residents off.

The operation, launched by the National Capital Commission, is planning toexpand from its current fleet of more than 100 bikes at 10 stations.

But city politicians say a greater focus on safety is necessary in order for that to happen.

"If we partner with them, we have to see if we can better educate people on use of helmets and perhaps work with health units to provide helmets," Mayor Jim Watson said.

Helmets are a crucialfactor to have been overlooked in the Bixi program, say potential customers.

'Giving it a miss'

"We'd really like to be riding around town," one person said. "We have visitors in, but the girls didn't bring their helmets, so we're giving it a miss this time."

Some other local bike-rental businesses give out helmets for every bike they rent out.

Ottawa city councillor Katherine Hobbs thinks helmets should also be a necessity for Bixi.

"From my perspective, there would have to be helmets offered,"Hobbs said. "I can't see that service without offering helmets."

NCC officials also urge cyclists to wear helmets, but say they don't want to be in the business of renting them due to hygiene and safety reasons.

"What if someone drops it? Would it protect someone else from a head injury?" said NCC spokesperson Jasmine Leduc.

Ontario laws require everyone under 18 to wear a helmet while riding a bicycle, and helmets are strongly recommended by safety advocates for all riders.
