Peter Herauf charged with murder in daytime ByWard Market stabbing

Peter Herauf, 37, has been charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of Kayla Sullivan in the ByWard Market on Friday afternoon.

PeterHerauf, 37,has been charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of Kayla Sullivan in the ByWard Market on Friday afternoon.

The 30-year-old woman was stabbed in the lower back at around 4:30 p.m. near George and Cumberland streets, near the Salvation Army Booth Centre, in what witnesses described as a dispute over money.

"It was kind of like a drive-by, but it was a run-up," witness Adam Smith told CBC News on Friday.

Smith, 19, said he was among a group that chased after the stabbing suspect, leading to a brawl, but the man got away.

A man in his 30s was also stabbed in the chest during the dispute and taken to hospital in serious condition.

A suspect was later arrested in Gatineau.

Herauf was charged with first degree murder, aggravated assault and having a dangerous weapon.

Herauf and Sullivan were both known to police.

Sullivan died of her injuries early Saturday morning, police said. Her death marks Ottawa's15thhomicide of 2016.

Some people who are staying at the Salvation Army Booth Centre said Sunday that there was a memorial at the spot where Sullivan was stabbed on Saturday night.
