Iced cap: Ottawa currently coldest capital city in the world

Ottawa's temperatures have fallen below every other capital city in the world, reaching a low of 29 C.

The extreme coldhas pushed Ottawawell below the rest of the world's coldest capital cities.

Mongolia's capital, Ulan Bator, is on average the coldest national capitalin the world.

But Ottawa'sovernight temperatureof29 C on Wednesdayfell below that forUlan Bator, which experienced an overnight lowof about 26C.

Extreme cold weather grips Ottawa

Ottawa residents brave the bone-chilling weather as the city is under an extreme cold warning from Environment Canada.

Moscow and Astana, Kazakhstan, two of the other coldest capitals according to the World Atlas,recorded Wednesday overnight lowsof around 2 C and13 C, respectively.

Some other temperatures from world capitals recorded overnight:

  • Helsinki 1 C
  • Reykjavik4 C
  • Tallinn 0 C
  • Nuuk, Greenland6 C

The overnight temperature inNovosibirsk, the unofficial capital of the Russian region of Siberia, reached a low of 14.

With wind chills making itfeel like 36 in Ottawa, the public health office issued a frostbite warningthat remained in effect Thursday.
