On Sunday afternoon, a 53-year-old man died after his vehicle was struck during a suspected street race on Maloney Boulevard in Gatineau.

Witnesses told Gatineau police that it appeared a motorcycle and a black Honda Civic were racing when the driver of the car lost control and hit the victim's vehicle.

A 22-year-old man was arrested. He had allegedly been driving the Honda Civic.

"This young man is very lucky he didn't lose his life and very lucky he didn't kill his girlfriend that was sitting in the car next to him," said Gatineau police Lieut. Andr Dubois, who said charges could be laid against the suspect Tuesday or later in the week.

The motorcycle driver fled the scene.

Dubois said many street races are well-organized events that include people with radios who look out for police, but this may not have been one of those cases.

"My personal opinion is what happened on Sunday was just a spur-of-the moment really, really bad decision."
