A television host, a newspaper editor and a local community association president are among the candidates vying to become the next councillor for Ottawa's eastern-most ward.
Friday afternoon marked the deadline forcandidates to file their nomination papers to run for the council seat for Cumberland, left vacant when former councillorStephen Blais waselected MPP for Orlansin February.
Blais had representedthe sprawling ward,which includes Ottawa's rural eastern reaches as well as parts of suburban Orlans,since 2010, when he was first elected to council.
Ottawa city council formally declared the seat vacant in late March but agreed to deferthe byelectiondue to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
As of Aug. 21, 10 candidates are registered to run in the byelection:
Yvette Ashiri
Yvette Ashiriis aproducer and host of the television show Identit Cultur'Elles and executive vice-president of Junior Chamber International Canada.
Ashirialso chairs the school council of colelmentairepublique des Sentiers, and sits on the governance committee of the Montfort Hospital and on the board of directors of La Citcollege, according to her campaign website.

All voters can also apply for a special mail-in ballot with the Elections Office. The application window for a mail-in ballot opens Sept. 5 and closes Sept.13, 2020, at 5 p.m.Electors will be required to mail or deliver their completed special ballot to theElections Officeby 4:30 p.m. on voting day, Oct. 5.
