Ottawa police shoot and kill dog after attack on father, infant

Ottawa Police Services say they had to kill a dog after it tried to attack a man and his one-year-old son in the Sandy Hill neighbourhood Friday evening.

Policewere called to the 200 block of Wiggins Private around 6:30 p.m.following areportof a dog attack, the Ottawa Police Service said in a statementSaturday afternoon.

That's when an officer noticed a large, "aggressive"bullmastiff-Rottweilermixrunning through the neighbourhood.

Police saidthe animalknocked a man and his infant son to the ground and continued to bite the man.

The officer thennoticed the dog turning towards the young boy and fearing the dogwould continue to attack shot and killed it, police said.

The adult suffered non-life threatening injuries to his face, hands and buttock, said police, whilethe one-year-oldsustained minor injuries to his forehead due to his fall.

The city's bylaw officeis investigating.
