Jagtar Gill homicide suspect to face 1st-degree murder charge

A woman arrested Tuesday in connection with the homicide of Barrhaven woman Jagtar Gill is expected to be charged with first-degree murder, police sources tell CBC News.

A woman arrested Tuesday in connection with thehomicide of BarrhavenwomanJagtarGill is expected to be charged with first-degree murder, police sources tell CBC News.

Gill, 43, was found stabbed multiple times in the living room of her home at174BramblingWay on Jan. 29.

Police said Tuesday an arrest had been made but said they would not be releasing any further details until the woman appeared in court Wednesday morning.

However, police sources said a woman who is not a family member was arrested Tuesdayafternoon atGreenbankPolice Station. Police had asked her to show up at the police station of her own accord.

The woman lived in the area near Gill's home, sources confirmed, adding that she works for OC Transpowith Gill's husband,Bhupinderpal.

The woman is a married mother of two and lives in the same neighbourhood as the Gills.

Family had not been contacted before arrest

Gill's death was the city's first homicide of 2014.

She was found in her home by her husband and 15-year-old daughter on the day of her 17th wedding anniversary.

Gill was survived by her husband, Bhupinderpal, and their three children, aged 15, 10 and 8.

The victim's brother-in-law, Sat Dhaliwal, said police had not contacted the familyabout the arrest. But he said the news is a relief after living in fear since Gill's homicide.

"We're sleeping a little better tonight, hoping to find out who the culprit is," said Dhaliwal.
