NDP's Ian Arthur elected in Kingston and the Islands

New Democratic Party candidate Ian Arthur has defeated the Liberal incumbent and been elected in Kingston and the Islands.

New Democratic Party candidate Ian Arthur has defeated the Liberal incumbent and been elected in Kingston and the Islands.

With all polls counted, Arthur has 39.3 per cent of the vote. His closest competitor, Liberal incumbent Sophie Kiwala, had 27.5 per cent of the vote.Gary Bennett, a former mayor of Kingston runningfor the Progressive Conservatives, had 26 per cent of the vote.

The provincial riding of Kingston and the Islands has been represented by all three major parties duringits history, but has remained in Liberal hands for the past several elections.

The riding lost 40 per cent of its territory toLanarkFrontenacKingston, but would have gone to Liberal incumbent SophieKiwalaanyway during the 2014 general election even if it hadits 2018 boundaries.

The riding includes part of the City of Kingston, including Queen's University,as well as the township of Frontenac Islands.

Also running in the riding were:

  • RobertKiley, a small business marketer, for the Green Party.He's also the deputy leader of the Greens.
  • AndreImbeaultforthe Trillium Party.
  • HeatherCunningham forthe Libertarian Party.
  • Nathan Weatherdonforthe None of the Above Direct Democracy Party.
