Canadian Tire Centre will screen all fans with walk-through metal detectors beginning Sept. 20 as part of its upgraded security policy, it was announced Tuesday.

The metal detectors will remain for all events at the arena from that point forward, according to a news release from the Canadian Tire Centre.

The Ottawa Senators open their pre-season schedule on Sept. 21 with a pair of games against the Toronto Maple Leafs one in Ottawa and another in Toronto.

"The magnetometers are mandatory for all National Hockey League games starting in 2015-16 and will remain in use for all non-hockey events," the release said.

"Patrons will use these walk-through magnetometers upon entry, allowing for guests to enter the venue as quickly and efficiently as possible."

Security officers could pat down fans, or use handheld wands in "unique circumstances," the release notes.

Fans will have to remove all metallic objects from their pockets, such as keys, but won't be asked to remove shoes or belts, the release added.

No smoking during games, events

The other new security measure will ban any fan from exiting and re-entering the arena with the same ticket, much like the measure at the recent FIFA Women's World Cup.

Exceptions will be made in the case of emergencies, though.

Smoking will also only beallowed in designated areas before and after games, but not during.

The re-entry policy follows similar rules at other major professional sports venues, according to Cyril Leeder, president of Senators Sports and Entertainment.

"We want to be clear to our fans, these measures have been put in place to ensure everyone entering Canadian Tire Centre will know they can enjoy a safe and secure environment," said Cyril Leeder, president of Senators Sports & Entertainment.

The news release also said the bag policy remains in effect as patrons can only bring small soft-sided handbags, diaper bags and bags used for medical purposes into events.

Backpacks, coolers and duffle bags are not allowed inside the arena.

The Toronto Blue Jays increased their security measures for this season, while the Scotiabank Saddledomealso has metal detectors at the arena in Calgary.
