New Ottawa basketball team called 'Tomahawks'

The Senators are about to get some company in Ottawa's growing sports landscape as two new franchises revealed their names.

Ottawa's first professional basketball team has been named the Ottawa Tomahawks.

Ottawa's two newest sports teams were unveiled as the new soccer team will be Ottawa Fury FC and the new basketball team will be the Ottawa Tomahawks.

Ottawa's entry in the relatively new National Basketball League of Canada will be named the "Tomahawks,"officials with Bytown Sports and Entertainment announcedTuesday afternoon.

Ottawawill become the NBL's ninth team in addition to Windsor, London, Oshawa, Montreal, Moncton, Saint John, Halifax andSummerside.

The league is entering its third season and Ottawa willfirst hit the court in November at Scotiabank Place.

The name of the local North American Soccer League team, set to debut in 2014,was announcedat the Algonquin Sports Complex.

The name, Ottawa Fury Football Club, is alsothe name of a local soccer organization owned byOttawa Sports and Entertainment Group principal John Pugh.

OSEGsaid it received more than 4,000 submissions in their naming campaign. The team is scheduled to begin its inaugural season at Frank Clair Stadium at Lansdowne Park.

The group is also working on picking a name for the city's Canadian Football League franchise, but hasn't said when that name will be revealed.
