Jacob Thompson, 40, ID'd as victim in fatal Elmira Drive shooting

Ottawa police have identified the man who died after a shooting at a rowhouse in the city's west end Saturday morning.

Jacob Thompson, 40, was found suffering from a gunshot wound on the 2100 block of Elmira Drive at around 2 a.m., the Ottawa Police Service said Saturday afternoon.

Officers were called to the area after receiving multiple reports thata shothad beenfired. Thompson was taken to hospital, where he later died, police said.

Neighbour Muhammad Khan, whocalled 911 after the shooting, toldCBC that "about four or five"people were having a gatheringin one of the units just behind his housewhen the shooting happened.

"I was trying to sleep, and I was [hearing]noises from the back here, a little bit of music, chatting, laughing," Khan said. "Then I heard screaming inside the house."

Khan said he overheard a man and woman fighting.

"He said 'I love you, I love you, that's why I'm here. Because of you I'm here.' And she said 'I don't want you. Just go away. Just leave.' And then suddenly I heard a shot a single shot."

The shooting was the city's 47th of 2016, as well as its 12th homicide.

Marwan Arab, 20, was shot and killed inside Shifa restaurant on Cobden Road at the end of January, not far from the scene of Saturday's killing.

In March, police alsoinvestigated a non-fatal shooting on the 2000 block of Elmira Drive.

"I know we've had some past shootings in close proximity to this area, but in this stretch or this block, I can't comment if there's been any sort of past criminal activity like this," said DutyInsp.Sean McDade.

As of 12 p.m., police had no suspects and no one in custody, McDade said.

Police 'here all the time'

SarmadAlbiladiwasvisitinghis mother and younger brotherSaturday morning in one of therowhousesnext to where the shooting happened.

"There's cops here all the time," saidAlbiladi. "I mean, I'm not really surprised to see [the police cars] but I was surprised to see somebody got murdered, man.That's crazy."

Police are urging anyone who saw something suspicious on the 2100 block of Elmira early Saturday morning to come forward.
