Cyclist in critical condition after east end collision

A 27-year-old man remains in critical condition after he was struck by a vehicle in the east end Wednesday morning.

Paramedics were called to Renaud Road at 11:10 a.m. by an off-duty police officerat the scene.

Paramedics said the driver hit the cyclist from the back. The cyclist then went into the vehicle's windshield before falling onto the ground.

The cyclist suffered head injuries and was unconscious when emergency crews arrived, paramedics said.

He was reportedly not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.

He was transported to hospital and remains in critical condition, paramedics said.

Coun. Laura Dudas, who represents the area, said she is horrifed to hear about the collision and hopes the cyclistrecovers.

She said Renaud Road has two tight turns and is a known issue for drivers.

"It has posed an issue for many motorists, there have been a number of cars that have slipped off the side," she said.

She said she doesn't yet know what caused Wednesday's collision, but wants to know if there are design changes that could be made.

"I am eager to find out what it is they identified as the issue and if there is something we can do in the short term to address it."

In the long term, she said Brian Coburn Boulevard needs to be extended. She said that change would take pressure off of Renaud Road.

"It just goes to show we need more infrastructure in the east end to really address the growth."
