Ottawa terror suspect granted bail

Misbahuddin Ahmed, an Ottawa man charged in connection with an alleged terrorism plot, has been granted bail.

He was ordered released by ajustice of the peace in Ottawaafter hisfamily agreed to post $20,000 cash bail and put up $625,000 in bonds and sureties.

Under the strict conditions of the release, Ahmed's passport is forfeited, he cannot go outside Ontario or Quebec and must stay with his in-lawsin Quebec. He is not allowed to use the internet, a cellphone or other wireless device, and may not possess a weapon or material that can be usedto make aweapon.

He alsocan't try to contact either of his co-accused or any member of a terrorist organization, and he is not allowed to withdraw more than $500 from the bank.

Evidence presented at the hearing is subject to a publication ban.

His lawyer, Mark Ertel, said the public has nothing to fear from Ahmed.

"A very experienced, knowledgeable justice of the peace took almost two weeks to make her decision,scoured the evidence, and she, on behalfof the community, ensured that his release would be safe andthat the public would not be in danger," Ertel said.

Ahmed, a 26-year-old Ottawa x-ray technologist, was arrested on Aug. 25 along with Hiva Alizadeh, 30, also of Ottawa, and Khurram Sher, 28, of London, Ont.

All three men were charged with conspiring to facilitate terrorism. AlizadehandSher remain in custody.

Ahmed and Alizadeh have been charged with possessing or making an explosive substance with the intent to harm. Alizadeh has also been charged withproviding property or financial services for the benefit of a terrorist group.

Sher'sbail hearing begins Wednesday and isexpected to last three days.
