Mathieu Fleury re-elected in Rideau-Vanier despite shelter 'fiasco'

The voters in Rideau-Vanier have re-elected Mathieu Fleury for his third term despite simmering tension over the city's decision to move the Salvation Army's shelter to Montreal Road.

The voters in Rideau-Vanierhave re-electedMathieu Fleuryfor his third term despite simmering tension over the city'sdecision to move the Salvation Army's shelter to Montreal Road.

With all 119 polls reporting, Fleuryunofficially won with nearly 68 per cent of the vote. His closest rival, businessman ThierryHarris, put up 3,050 votes to Fleury's7,302.

Many people in Vanier continue to opposecity council's decision to approve Salvation Army's 350-bed homeless shelter.

They're appealing the decision, and every candidate in the ward promised to fight its construction. Fleury called ita "zoning fiasco."

Other issues in Vanier include a lack of rapid transit, community policing and revitalizing the ByWard Market.

Fleury, a former city lifeguard,was first elected to represent the ward in 2010, and won again in 2014 with 51 per cent of the vote.

The city clerk is expected to declare the official results by Thursday.

The fourcandidates were:

  • Salar Changiz
  • Mathieu Fleury(incumbent)
  • Thierry Harris
  • Matt Lowe
