Owner charged for pit-bulls' attack on toddler

Ottawa police have charged the male owner of three pit bulls in connection with an attack on a small boy last Thursday.

Schridev Caf, 21, faces three counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

Caf's dogs jumped a low, chain-link fence and attacked two-year-old Jayden Clairoux and his father as they walked through a park on Feb. 24. One pit bull clamped down on the boy's head before the man and his neighbour managed to beat the animals away. The adults were badly bitten.

Earlier this week, police laid charges against a 17-year-old girl, who can't be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. She too faces three counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

The teenager was charged on the same day the Ontario legislature passed legislation to ban pit bulls.

In January, the same three pit bulls went after a boy skating on a rink. In that case, older brother Robert Adams beat the dogs away with a shovel, although it wasn't clear whether they just wanted to play. The boy suffered minor injuries.

The dogs have been seized by the city and are in the care of the Humane Society. Caf also faces six charges of violating city bylaws, with potential fines of $30,000.

Caf turned himself into police Friday and is scheduled to appear in court Saturday morning.
