Rideau Canal Skateway closed for 2014-15 season

The red flags went up on the Rideau Canal Skateway at 10 p.m. Monday, ending a record-breaking 59 consecutive days of skating.

Skating conditions Monday afternoon were considered poor as the temperature hovered around 4 C. With the temperatureexpected to reach about 9 C on Tuesday and Wednesday, the NCC said Monday evening thatthe skating season is officially over.

The 45thskating season beganJan. 10 with a3.6-kilometre section opened between Somerset Street and the Bank Street Bridge, excluding Patterson Creek.

Patterson Creek opened on Jan. 11, and the 800-metre downtown section opened Jan. 13.

The remaining 3.2kilometres of ice from Carleton University to Bank Street opened soon after, creating 7.8 kilometres of ice to skate on.

Last season, the Rideau Canal Skateway was open for 58 skating daysbetween Dec. 31, 2013, and March 11, 2014.
