Rideau Street to reopen to buses, taxis on Saturday

A section of Rideau Street that closed after a large sinkhole formed more than three weeks ago will reopen to buses and taxis on Saturday, according to the latest update from the city.

A section of Rideau Street that closed after a large sinkhole formed more than three weeks ago will reopen to buses and taxis on Saturday, according to the latest update from the city.

Buses and taxis will be able to travel along Rideau between Waller Street and Sussex Drive, but that section remains closed to motorists and cyclists because of ongoing light rail construction, according to a City of Ottawa media release.

The same section of road was opened to pedestrians in time for Canada Day celebrations on Friday.

"Since the road collapse occurred a little over three weeks ago, crews have been working around the clock to safely restore and repair the roadway,"Mayor Jim Watson is quoted saying in the news release. "We wanted it done as soon as possible, but it had to be done safely I applaud everyone's efforts and cooperation."

Earlier this weeksouthbound Sussex Drive was reopenedfrom George Street to Rideau.

Motorists and cyclists travelling north on Colonel By are now alsoable to travel through the Rideau and Sussex intersection and head northbound on Sussex.

All pedestrian crossings at the Rideauand Sussex intersection have reopened, as havepedestrian walkways on Rideau.
