Canada Science and Technology Museum launches mural contest to adorn construction site

The Canada Science and Technology Museum is looking to young peoplefor help decoratingits construction site on St. Laurent Boulevard while the building undergoes a major renovation.

The museum haslaunched a mural contest to"celebrate the role of creativity and the arts inscience," according to a news release.

"The mural contest is an invitation to Canadian youth to play an active role in the renewal of the museum," said Alex Benay, president and CEO of the Canada Science and Technology Museums Corporation, in the news release.

"It is also an example of commitment to inspire creative thinking and cultivate its growth among youth in our community and beyond."

'How does science inspire you?'

Canadian students between the ages of 4 and 19 are invited to enter work until May 30. Submissionsmust answer the question, "How does science inspire you?"

Local graffiti artists will then replicate five winning submissions ina larger mural on the hoarding walls surrounding the museum's construction site.

"When the mural is completed, it will illustrate our vision for the museum as a place where science and art meet," saidBenay.

The museum was forced to close its doors in September 2014 after maintenance workers discovered mould in its walls, following years of complaints about leaks in the roof.

It's expected to reopen in the fall of 2017.

Minister attends launch

MinisterMlanie Joly attended the contest launch at the constructionsite Wednesday.

Students were also there showing off some early submissions.

"Events like this also help promote a culture where young people and the public are encouraged to engage in all aspects of science, including the art of science," said Duncan in the news release.

Each contest winner will receive a technology-themedprize valued at $1,000.
