Scuba diver drowns in Morrison's Quarry in western Quebec

Police say a53-year-old scuba diver drowned in western Quebec in an area that is also known asa popular bungee jumping destination.

Police in the Outaouais said Marco Laplante of Gatineau drowned in the icy waters on Sunday afternoon.

According to police, Laplante was a relatively inexperienced diver who received his SCUBA certification April 2013 and this was his first under-ice dive this year.

Police said Laplante dove into the water with two other divers and started to panic when he reached about 36 metres deep.

An instructor dealing with other students at the quarry dove in to try and rescue Laplante but was too late.

Morrison's Quarry is home to the Great Canadian Bungee Corporation and is known as a popular spot for divers.

Police are now investigating.
