Soldier accused of killing wife abandons bail bid

A 50-year-old warrant officer with the Canadian Armed Forces will remain in jail on a first-degree murder charge in the death of his wife, 28-year-old Melissa Richmond.

A 50-year-old Canadian solider accused of killing his 28-year-old wife dropped his application for bail Wednesday morning.

Howard Richmond, a warrant officer with the Canadian ArmedForces, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Melissa Richmond in August 2013.

Richmondreported his wifemissing on July 24, saying she did not return after leaving theirWinchester, Ont. home for a late-night drive. Her body was discoveredin a deep ditch along Bank Street near theSouth Keys Shopping Centre parking lot where her car was abandoned.

She hadbeen stabbed multiple times, police sources told CBC News.

Before his arrest, Richmond told CBC News that hehas received treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder. He has donesix tours of duty three in Afghanistan, two in Bosnia and one in Cyprus.

Ageomaticstechnician by trade, Richmond was working forthe Integrated Personnel Support Centre in Ottawa when he was arrested in August.He has been with the Canadian Armed Forces since 1988.

Richmond'spreliminary hearing is set to begin May 12.
