The Sparks Street Mall is exploring the idea of hosting a weekday farmers' market, one that could begin as early as this summer.

The pedestrian-only Sparks Street in downtown Ottawa is often empty in the colder seasons, but on sunny summer days like Thursday thousands of workers walk the strip.

Sparks Street Mall executive director Les Gagn said he sees an opportunity in all that foot traffic.

"When you look at a lot of destinations in other very pedestrian places, you know there's usually that locally grown produce that's made available," said Gagn.

"I think a farmers' market, if in fact that happens, I think it'll bring in additional traffic, it's going to enhance the whole feel of the community down here on Sparks Street," he said.

The idea is still in its early stages, but Gagn said the mall has been reaching out to vendors, gauging their interest in setting up stalls on weekdays.

Regulars on Sparks Street said they welcomed the idea and said it would breathe more life onto the street and let workers get groceries on their break.

"I think that would be a great idea, and I would be happy to shop...easier access to fruits and vegetables...and maybe the odd flowers to keep the ladies happy," said Earle DePass.
