New charges laid in Ottawa terrorism case

New charges were laid this week against two men accused of plotting terrorist attacks in Canada following the 2010 terrorism investigation dubbed Project Samossa.

Hiva Mohammad Alizadeh, 32, and Misbahuddin Ahmed, 28, each face a new charge of participation in the activities of a terrorist group, according toan indictmentfiled Monday in Ontario Superior Court.

Both men already face one count each of conspiring to facilitate terrorist activity and one count of making or having explosives in their possession.

A third man, Khurram Syed Sher, 30, faces a charge of conspiring to facilitate terrorist activity.

All three were arrested and their homes raided in 2010 after an RCMP investigation. Police accused the three men of plotting with others in Canada and abroad to aid terrorism activities.

Ahmed, an Ottawa X-ray technologist, and Alizadeh, who police have suggested was the ringleader of the group, were arrested in Ottawa. Sher, a pathologist, was arrested at his home in London, Ont.

Pre-trial hearings for the three men are expected later this year.
