Jim Durrell, Sheila Copps receive Order of Canada

Nine eastern Ontario residents are among the latest list of 91 recipients of the Order of Canada, which includes former Ottawa mayor Jim Durrell and former MPs Brian Tobin and Sheila Copps.

The full list of newly-crowned appointments also included two former members of the 1972 Summit Series hockey team that defeated the Soviet UnionPaul Henderson and Ken Dryden.

The list also featured Michael Enright, host of CBC Radio's Sunday Edition.

Here is the list ofeastern Ontariorecipients and their contributions:

  • Louise Charron |Aformer Supreme Court justicewho has focused on French common-law education.
  • Sheila Copps | A former deputy prime minister anda champion of cultural issues at the national and international levels.
  • Brian Tobin |He contributed to Canadian public policy as a Liberal MP and supported economic development in Newfoundland and Labrador as its premier.
  • Jim Durrell | A decades-long contributor to the City of Ottawa as a businessman, mayor and committed volunteer.
  • Phil Fontaine| A First Nations leader whoplayed a role in the resolution of claims arising from the Indian residential schools issue.
  • Col. John Alan Gardam| For hisvolunteer efforts on behalf of peacekeepers and veterans following his retirement from a decorated career in the Canadian Forces.
  • M. G. Venkatesh Mannar | A leader in the global fight against malnutrition and micronutrient deficiency.
  • Rachel Thibeault | She expanded the boundaries of occupational therapy and advocacy on behalf of people with disabilities.
  • John Ross | A technology innovator who developed products at the forefront of broadcast engineering.

The 91 recipients will receive their designation at a later date at Rideau Hall.
