Western LRT expansion plan passed by city committee

The city's preferred route for the western expansionof light railwas passed unanimously by a city committee Wednesday, despite the fact it doesn't meet theNational Capital Commission's requirements.

The plan would see 700 metres of light rail buried underNCC land, not the entire1.2-kilometre stretch theNCC hadasked for at the end of June.

The city had come to Wednesdays transit committee meeting withthe plan to bury just 700 metres underneath the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway after consulting nearby residents concerned about noise.

The western extension would come after completion of the initial Confederation Line in 2018, which is set to connect the Tunneys Pasture stationin the west to Blair station in the east.

The western LRT would bring light rail service to Baseline Station near Algonquin College and could start in 2023 at the earliest.
