Westgate Shopping Centre's future up for discussion Wednesday night

Residents in the Kitchissippi neighbourhood will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at the Best Western Hotel to discuss plans to turn the Westgate Shopping Centre into a number of mixed-use highrises.

Ottawa residents will meet tonight to hear about plans from RioCan to transform the Westgate Shopping Centre into a series of mixed-use towers.

RioCan Real Estate Investment Trusthas released images of the multiphase plan which wouldculminate in the opening of the five towers. The buildings wouldincludeboth commercial space and 28 floors of residences.

The Westgate Shopping Centre, located at the corner of CarlingAvenue and Merivale Road,was Ottawa's first mall, opening in the 1950s.

Couns. Riley Brockingtonand Jeff Leiper are hosting tonight's community meeting which is set to run from 6 to 8 p.m. atthe Best Western Hotel at 1309 Carling Ave.

On his website, Brockington said the meeting will be an opportunity for residents to speak with RioCan, architects, planners and municipal staff, before applications are submitted to the city.
