A 67-year-old man is dead in a multi-vehicle crash on the Trans-Canada Highway west of Charlottetown.

The accident occurred in whiteout conditions at North Tryon near the turnoff to Confederation Bridge.

RCMP Staff Sergeant Ken Spenceley, commander of Prince District, said four vehicles were involved in the crash, which happened at about 9:45 a.m.

"A vehicle had gone into a snow bank and was being towed out by another vehicle that stopped to assist," said Spenceley.

"When the vehicle was being towed out, a vehicle behind it collided with a vehicle and also struck a 67-year-old man from Charlottetown. And he was pronounced dead on the scene."

Spenceley said the man who died was the driver of the vehicle that was stuck in the snow bank. His name is not being released at this time.

RCMP say the road is open again, but ice conditions and drifting snow are making conditions treacherous.
