Two new snow-removal companies have been hired for the next five years in Charlottetown.

J.E Matheson Construction and Chapman Brothers Construction have been awarded contracts at a combined cost to the city of more than $17,000 per kilometre.

This will mean better snow removal with newer machines, says public works chairman Coun. Terry Bernard.

"I think over the last couple of years there's been a decline in the service level. I think it will make a drastic improvement," said Bernard.

"None of the equipment is older than five years old, and the pieces of equipment have changed quite drastically, so I think people will notice a considerable change."

The province has also been hired for the next seven years to clear priority streets at a cost of $14,000 per kilometre.

Corrections

  • The story originally said two companies previously had the snow removal contracts in Charlottetown: Label and Crosby's Construction. In fact, just Label Construction held the contracts for snow removal in the city last year.
