7 teens charged after ATVs driven erratically through Tignish

Seven teenagers in western P.E.I. have been charged after allegedly driving their all-terrain vehicles through Tignish over the weekend.

RCMP say they received a complaint Saturday afternoon about ATVs driving erratically in the community.

The responding officers apparently saw the teens travelling on main roads.

Police were able to identify the drivers with help from concerned residents and the town's surveillance equipment.

The seven teenagers have been charged under the Off-Highway Vehicle Act and face fines as a penalty.

RCMP took the opportunity to remind the public that driving on public roadways or the shoulder of roads, on the Confederation Trail, beaches or sand dunes on the Island is illegal.

"Illegal off-road vehicle use is dangerous to members of the community and those driving the vehicles," RCMP said in a written release.

"RCMP urge drivers to know and follow the rules for safe use and warn that not abiding by the law will result in fines."
