Abortion access in Canada by the numbers

P.E.I. is the only province where surgical abortions aren't performed. But in other provinces or territories, women may still have to travel hundreds of kilometres to the nearest facility.

On Tuesday, Abortion Access Now PEI announced it was taking the the P.E.I. government to court in order to force the province to provide unrestricted access to publicly funded abortion services on the Island.

Data analysis by CBC News indicates access to abortion providers varies by province.

Ontario, which has the largest population, also has the most facilities 13.

But Nunavut, which has the largest surface area, only has one provider.

The number of facilities isn't tied to population size.

Alberta, which had a female population of2,064,191 in 2015, has twoproviders.

There are six facilities inBritish Columbia, which had a female population of2,358,862.
