All P.E.I. drunk drivers could face interlock

The P.E.I. government is considering mandatory ignition interlock devices, which drivers have to blow into before their cars will start, for first-time drunk drivers.

The P.E.I. government is considering mandatory ignition interlock devices, which drivers have to blow into before their cars will start, for first-time drunk drivers.

Currently, ignition interlock devices are mandatory for repeat offenders, but the Transportation Department is considering a change.

"It is under review. It's actively being discussed in the department as a legislative initiative," said director of highway safety John MacDonald.

"It hasn't received approval at this point, but it's being discussed."

The current law allows judges to impose the ignition interlock system on first-time offenders. A first-time offender can also ask for the device in exchange for a reduced driving suspension.

One change concerning the devices has already been made. Fines are increasing for those who are supposed to drive with the interlock system, but don't. The current minimum fine is $200. That will increase to $500.
