Anne 1st edition goes to auction

A first edition of Anne of Green Gables could bring in a price well into five digits, says a representative of the company auctioning the book.

The 1908 edition of the L. M. Montgomery classic will be auctioned Monday by Doyle of New York. Theestimated sale price is$8,000to $12,000 US.

"I would say that our estimate is a very conservative one," said Doyle spokesman Edward Ripley-Duggan.

"If the market is there and is strong there will be a strong response. We feel that there is deep interest in Anne and that this stands a good chance of going beyond, perhaps well beyond, the high estimate.But until the hammer falls there's no way of telling."

Earlier this year a first edition sold for $8,605 US. In 2009 a first edition sold for the record price of $37,500 US.

This particular book is described by Doyle as "one of the freshest copies, externally and internally, of this fragile work we have seen."
