2 beehives added to community garden in Charlottetown

Several thousand bees are the latest addition to a community garden in Charlottetown.

At the Farm Centre Legacy Garden there are two structures more than three metrestall and shaped like giant beehives. Now, they will have real beehives inside.

"This is a public demonstration of bees in, of bees working. So that you'll be able to see how the bees exit and enterthe hives," said the beekeeper in charge, John Burhoe.

He says this will give people a better understanding of bees at work.

"You'll be able to see the pollen that's on their back legs, and get a feel for how the bees are working the various field crops we have here."

The hives are called the Urban Beehive Project.

There are about 6,000 to 7,000 bees in each of the two large hive houses.Burhoe said there likely aren't enough bees to produce any honey this year.
