Belcourt Centre reprieve wish of new committee

Some people in the Rustico, P.EIarea are not giving up on efforts to save Belcourt Centre.

The Belcourt Centre was originally built in the 1880s and rebuilt after a fire in the 1930s. During that time it has served as a school and a convent. For the past 40 years it has served as a retreat centre, run by theCatholic diocese of Charlottetown.

The diocese plans to demolish the old building this year and replace it with a new structure thanks to a donation earmarked for the centre.

However, anew committee of local residents maintains the old building has historical and cultural significance in that location.

They're holding a meeting Sunday afternoon to figure out what to do next and explore other options.

Committee chair Art Buote says they want the diocese to at least wait one year before moving forward.
