Summerside-Wilmot Progressive Conservative Association prepares for byelection

Preparations are underway by the Progressive Conservative Association in District 21, Summerside-Wilmot to be ready when the byelection for the riding is called.

Riding association says 'women can play a huge role' in future of party

The Progressive Conservative Association in District 21, Summerside-Wilmot says it is preparing for the upcoming byelection while still waiting for the date to be set.

Preparations are underway by the Progressive Conservative Association in District 21, Summerside-Wilmot to be ready when the byelection for the riding is called.

A byelection has to be held after the recent resignation of the Liberal MLA Janice Sherry.

Association president Gerard McCardle said the party came within 30 votes of winning the seat in the 2015 provincial election when Sherry defeated PCcandidate Brian Ramsay.

He added that close win means there is a lot of interest in the byelection.

'We want women to seriously look at this'

McCardle said the fact the provincial PC Party is also entering a leadership election process is also having an impact on the district.

"The goal is to have an excellent MLA but it would also be good if they have leadership aspirations.

Summerside district 21 wants the next premier of Prince Edward Island and we want it out there now that that is what we are looking for. And we want women to seriously look at this. We feel that women can play a huge role on the next election," said McCardle.

He said several potential candidates are already testing support.
