Charlottetown MP Sean Casey is standing by the Liberals' election promise to restore door-to-door mail delivery.

Canada Post announced Monday it was temporarily suspending future deployment of community mailboxes, but customers in communities where the boxes were already installed would continue to collect mail and parcels at the community boxes.

The news came the same day that more than 10,000 residents of Stratford and Charlottetown started collecting their mail at community boxes.

"I was pleased for the other Canadians who are about to have their service transferred," Casey told CBC News Tuesday.

"But I was extremely frustrated that Charlottetown is not in that group."

However, Casey believes this is a temporary situation.

"We committed during the election to save home mail delivery. That remains our commitment. Our commitment has not been fulfilled by this decision by Canada Post," he said.

"The next step is for the new government to review the mandate of Canada Post and to fulfil our election commitment to save home delivery, and that's what we'll do."
