Garth Slysz named one of Canada's top 10 docs

A family physicianin Charlottetown has been named one of Canada's top doctors.

Dr. Garth Slysz, who practicesin the Sherwood Family Medical Centre, will receive theReg L. Perkin Awards at a ceremony on Nov. 11.

A release from theCollege of Family Physicians of Canada saidSlysz is recognized for his "leadership and the compassion he has for his patients and students, as well as the people of Haiti, whom he supports through humanitarian aid efforts."

As part of his practice,Slysz teaches patients about chronic disease prevention.

The physician has provided health care on missions to Haiti, overseeing clinical team there and sends a regular supply of medications for Haitian clinics.

Slysz is also an associate professor and preceptor with Dalhousie University's Department of Family Medicine, allowing him to mentor medical students and family medicine residents.

Slysz hasserved as the director of Continuing Education with Queen Elizabeth Hospital for 20 years. He is a councilmember withP.E.I.'sCollege of Physicians and Surgeons.

Slyszis one of 10 family physicansacross Canada to receive the award.
