Charlottetown fire chief says 5% cut won't impact service to public

Despite cuttingfive per cent from its fire service budget, Charlottetown Fire Chief Randy MacDonald said there shouldn't be any impact on fire services to the public.

Each city department was asked to find cost savings and the MacDonald said fire services was able to cut $200,000 from its budget.

"Unfortunately, it's an uncomforting message," said MacDonald. "We are certainly aware of that. I'm aware of that. However when you are provided direction that cuts have to be made, then you have to make the cuts and hopefully not impact on service, which I don't believe service has been impacted here with these cuts."

To meet the necessary cuts, MacDonald said there will not be as many staff taking part in off-Island training and conferences.

The decision was also made to cancel the annual firefighter's ball, which was a way to thank the staff, volunteersand their spouses.

It was also the event where recognition awards were presented. MacDonald said the department is looking at another event to hand out those awards.
