Charlottetown gets new marina

The loss of berths from the construction of a new convention centre on the Charlottetown waterfront has created an opportunity for the creation of a new marina.

Quartermaster Marine will lose 25 berths once construction begins for the new convention centre at the foot of Queen St., and the Charlottetown Yacht club only has four spaces left.

The new marina is being built by Paul Madden, right in front of his newly constructed waterfront condominium, beside the cruise ship dock.

"Park your boat in your marina, walk up and go into your condo: simple, no need of a car," Madden told CBC News Tuesday.

"Hopefully by the end of the week what you'll see, coming off the boardwalk here pretty well centre of the condos, you'll see a gang plank going down for 53 feet which will lead out to the marina. All these are easy dock, floating platforms. They'll be anywhere from 28 to 44 slips."

Madden said there are currently no slips available for boats visiting in the Charlottetown area. The plans are to have room for up to 150 boats, available for rent for $2,000 a year.

Work crews are putting in the floating docks this week.
