Man escapes from Charlottetown house fire

A home on Valley Street in Charlottetown was struck by fire Tuesday night.

The call came in around 10 p.m. Homeowner Fred Sauer was able to get out safely, and believeshis dog did as well. His pet bird died in the fire. Sauer is hopinghis dog, a chihuahua named Rambo, will be found safe.

Deputy fire chief Tim Mamye was still at the scene Wednesdaymorning. Mamye said at one point firefighters had to be pulled out of the house because of the heat held in by the metal roof.

"Made it difficult to get at from [the]exterior with our ladder truck, but the crews made entry. Then we had to come out at a time because the smoke and the heat became too much," he said.

"We got outside and were doing a modified defensive attack where we were coming in through the windows and making some openings to come in through the side of the building."

Investigators are still looking into the cause of the fire.
