Charlottetown man, 50, arrested after apartment building fire

A 50-year-old Charlottetown man is facing arson charges after a fire in an apartment building in Charlottetown Friday morning, say Charlottetown Police.

Charges are pending and the man is being held in jail, say police. He will appear in provincial court at a later date.

Fire crews had to attack the fire from multiple angles. While some firefighters were on the ground, others used a ladder truck to attack the blaze in the upper levels of the building.

In addition to apartments the building also houses Rose'sBarber Shop. OwnerRose Savardsaidshe was trying to stay calm while the crews were continuing to pour water on the blaze.

Savard's shop used to be around the block, but eight years ago it was also damaged in a fire. She has insurance, but said she can't believe she is back to starting all over again.

"What can you do? You can scream or cry, it won't change anything," she said as she watched firefighters do their work.

One individual was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Watts,who happens to be a regular at the barber shop, also took time to pass along his thoughts to Savard.

Savard'sshop used to be around the block. Eight years ago it was also damaged in a fire which led to her moving to the new location. She has insurance, but said she can't believe she is back to starting all over again.

Watts said with the fire on the upper floors, the barber shop may be salvaged.

Firefighters said it is still too early to consider the cause or origin of the fire.
