Charlottetown mayor ready to take Stratford sewage

It would be a good idea for Stratford to send its sewage across the Hillsborough River to Charlottetown, says Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee.

"Taxpayers will benefit if the sewer lines are piped across the Hillsborough Bridge," Lee told a Rotary Club meeting in Charlottetown Thursday.

Stratford, the Island's fastest growing community, has been struggling to keep up with demands for sewage treatment. Lee suggested that by working together on a solution for waste water management in Stratford, taxpayers in both communities would benefit by not having to pay for another pollution control plant.

Stratford announced in March it was negotiating with the city to take its sewage. In April, the provincial government said an engineering study had determined the bridge could support the sewage lines.

The issue of Stratford's sewage was one example Lee gave in his speech, which focused on greater cooperation between different levels of government and with the private sector in the greater Charlottetown area.
