College of physicians again urged to open up

The P.E.I. Advisory Council on the Status of Women has joined calls for the province's College of Physicians and Surgeons to be more open.

The P.E.I. Advisory Council on the Status of Women has joined calls for the province's College of Physicians and Surgeons to be more open.

The Island's medical director has already criticized the college for not releasing more details about the suspension of the licence of Summerside physician Dr. Douglas Ian Cameron.

The Island women's organization is also concerned the college failed to inform the public it was holding public hearings into separate allegations against the doctor.

"This is an example of how the college needs to be a little more transparent in its work," advisory council director Lisa Murphy told CBC News Thursday.

"The general public really need to know that they're going to conduct their affairs [in a way] that, yes, balances the integrity of the membership of the college of physicians, but also balances that with the safety of every person that practitioner comes in contact with."

The advisory council has written to the P.E.I. College of Physicians and Surgeons outlining its concerns.
