P.E.I. bumper crops cause soybean storage issues

A bumper crop of wheat and barley, followed by the soybean harvest has caused storage issues for the P.E.I. Grain Elevator Corporation.

'There is only so much space and we had such good yields' - grain elevator manager

A bumper crop of wheat and barleyhas caused storage issues for the P.E.I. Grain Elevator Corporation.

The corporation ran out of space at the three grain elevators in the province when the soybean harvest came in.

General manager Neil Campbell said the shortage of space meant product had to be sent off island earlier than normal to be sold which can have an affect on prices.

"There is only so much space and we had such good yields on our wheat and our barley this year that the elevators were fuller than normal when the soybean harvest started. So space was a concern," said Campbell.

The space issue was caused by the late planting this spring which meant a later harvest.

"Normally we would have several weeks between a grain harvest and a soybean harvest to make room. This year, wheat finished on a Friday and on Monday or Tuesday, we were ready to start soybeans," said Campbell.

Campbell says the situation has since been resolved. He adds the corporation hopes to eventually have more storage space available on the Island.
