A new yuletide event called the Victorian Christmas Weekend kicked off on Victoria Row in Charlottetown Friday evening.

An initiative headed by Discover Charlottetown, the celebration began with singing, hot chocolate, and holiday treats outside the Confederation Centre of the Arts.

Free horse-drawn wagon rides, a wreath display, a chance to meet Santa, and a marketplace reminiscent of European-style Christmas markets will be featured

Shannon Courtney, Discover Charlottetown spokeswoman, says a variety of stakeholders decided to expand on an initiative that started last year, the Victorian Christmas Market. (CBC)

This weekend's event expands on a similar 2014 initiative, the Victorian Christmas Market, says Shannon Courtney, Discover Charlottetown spokeswoman.

"There was great success with that, and Discover Charlottetown and a number of other stakeholders in the city and in the tourism industry saw an opportunity to say, 'Let's build on that. Let's build a whole weekend and create a magical Christmas weekend that will have people coming to Charlottetown, enjoying a whole bunch of different traditions, including the open-air market, and a bunch of other things too.'"

The market will run from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Victoria Row will be closed to vehicles for the weekend.
